Company Increase Motive Battery Life & Reliability

The Golden Duck Meat and Poultry Company in Houston, Texas, used to suffer from constant problems with it's forklift batteries. For five years the company has been processing meat and poultry into cut parts which are packaged and kept in cold storage for distribution to retailers in all 50 states.

The company operates electric forklifts with four-year old batteries. The forklifts are used to load pallets of packaged product onto refrigerated trailers in a cold environment below 40 degrees. They load three semi trailers a day with about 40,000 pounds of meat and poultry products each. Total production is around 120,000 pounds a day.

The forklifts begin service at 6 a.m. and run until the close of business. Then, after cooling down, they are recharged. The problem the company had was even after a full recharge, the forklifts still had to be taken out of service during the day so they could be short charged in order to complete the shift.

Upon examination, the batteries were showing signs of positive plate bulging at the expansion joints. This indicated a major sulfation buildup problem which was preventing the batteries from accepting a full charge and limiting their use.

Company President Tony Luong is a well known and respected businessman within the large Asian business community of Houston and he prides himself in meeting customer demands. The last thing he needed is a production slow down due to dead forklift batteries.

Arthur Rodriguez, of the company that sold him the forklift, suggested Tony try PowerPulse. Tony installed a 36-volt PowerPulse on each forklift battery and within a month, the voltage readings had improved dramatically with the 18 2-volt cells leveling out substantially.

The forklifts are now in constant operation and the batteries are lasting a full shift eliminating any downtime or need to short charge them. The batteries are also no longer in jeopardy of cracking an expansion joint which could have eventually lead to a cell replacement at an approximate cost of $700-$1,000.

Tony is very happy with the results and the improved battery performance. In fact, he has told several business acquaintances about PulseTech products and now they are now using PowerPulse products in their own operations."I depend heavily on the productivity of the forklifts to load trucks for distribution sales," explains Tony. "After a month, it is clear to me that the PowerPulse was a wise investment. I have seen an overall increase in the battery's ability to store more energy, and they are putting out a longer shift."
