When considering the job of fleet service managers, one of the more challenging jobs has got to be managing a fleet for local cities. After all, not only are they responsible for maintaining vehicles and equipment, they are responsible for maintaining a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. Everything from school buses, to fire trucks, to police cruisers, to street cleaners, to portable compressors. Its situations like these where battery maintenance is really a key factor, Each vehicle and piece of equipment in most cases uses a different type of battery and places totally different demands on them. Not only does the fleet services manager have to keep track of what batteries to use, he has to keep track of how they are installed and how to get the best performance from all of them. This is where Ernie Ramos is one step ahead. Ernie is Fleet Services Manager for Coppell, Texas, just outside of Dallas, and Ernie feels he has the ideal battery maintenance solution for his fleets. He uses PulseTech ® products. "Fleet service managers for local and state governments are responsible for virtually every type of vehicle and equipment you can imagine," says Ernie, "and battery performance is a vital issue for all of us. After all, if they don't work, neither does the vehicle or the equipment." Ernie has been involved in fleet maintenance for almost 13 years, so he understands what it takes to keep a fleet going every day. Regardless of what the conditions, when a vehicle or piece of equipment is needed, Ernie must make sure its there every time. This is why he is a big believer in battery maintenance. And the best battery maintenance systems available, as far as he is concerned, are Solargizer and PowerPulse ® . ![]() "We demand so much from our electrical system," he continues. "We put them through a constant charge/discharge cycle. Add the fact that a lot of our vehicle operators tend to walk away leaving electrical systems on and we have a major problem with voltage spikes or worse. If PulseTech ® can help us get at least six months to a year more on our batteries, I will be happy. Based on what Ive seen so far, they can do that easily." Ernie first learned of PulseTech ® s battery maintenance systems when he visited the PulseTech ® booth during the April 1997 Equipment Maintenance Council meeting in Tucson, Arizona. Immediately, he realized the potential these products offered. So, not long after he returned home he ordered Solargizers. Coppell currently has units installed on a large number of vehicles and equipment, including all their police cruisers. Because of the positive results seen so far, Ernie plans on putting one on everything. One thing that really interested Ernie is the fact that pulse technology is cutting edge. He saw how it can literally change the battery industry. "I feel its my job to keep track of the latest developments in technology that will help my job and the vehicles I maintain," he says. "Technology has changed so much in the last five to ten years. In fact, I believe that if you are still using the same technology as ten years ago, you are making a big mistake. This is especially true for battery maintenance." Ernie is someone that a lot of other service managers listen to for advice. Besides his years of experience, he also sits on the board of directors of the Equipment Maintenance Council (EMC). The EMC is the association for equipment maintenance and management professionals. Ernie has been President of the North Texas Chapter of the EMC since 1995. In April 1997 he was elected to the national position of Vice President of Governments. In this prominent position, he represents other service managers of state and local governments across the country. He also writes a regular column about fleet maintenance in Up & Running , the official newsletter of the EMC. It goes out to all members and many of them trust what Ernie has to say about maintenance as it relates to their jobs. |
