It’s ironic that today’s vehicles are more and more technologically advanced, yet they still rely on batteries that are basically the same design as the one invented almost 100 years ago. Many experts predict lead-acid batteries will be the primary source of battery power well into the next century. The problem is, most batteries can barely handle the overwhelming demands of today's vehicles, let alone those of the future.

It’s interesting to note that there’s actually enough reactive material in lead-acid batteries to keep them operating reliably for eight to 10 years – or more. But, they don’t. The average life of a battery, depending on usage, is six to 48 months. But, according to a recent study, only 30% of all batteries actually reach the 48-month point.

The reason is a series of problems caused by sulfation buildup. And the solution is a line of patented battery maintenance systems from PulseTech using a revolutionary method called pulse technology.

Sulfation buildup occurs when sulfur molecules in the electrolyte (battery acid) discharge to the point where they begin to coat the battery’s lead plates (see Photo 1). The more the plates are coated, the less energy they can accept or release. Before long they become so coated the battery simply dies.

This process is the main reason for over 80% of all battery problems and failure.

Sulfation buildup and related problems are a natural by-product of battery operation. Sooner or later – usually sooner – they will kill your battery. And what many people don’t realize is when batteries are subjected to severe weather conditions, such as intense heat or cold, these problems are even worse.

For example, when the weather gets hotter, the buildup rate of sulfation will actually double for every 10º increase in temperature. That means if the temperature climbs from 75º to 95º, the buildup will occur 200% faster than normal.

When it’s cold outside, sulfation buildup will rob operational power because of vehicle fluids thickening. With thick fluids, it takes even more energy to start a vehicle, so the battery has to supplement this power. The result again is faster sulfation buildup.

In the past, nothing could be done to completely eliminate sulfation buildup. That is, until now. Because Pulse Tech offers a line of battery maintenance systems that will actually prevent the effects of sulfation buildup for the first time ever.
