409, 000 Miles and Counting:
Truck Reaches Legendary Status

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Haywood Gray of Virginia went 409,000 miles without getting the oil changed in his 1990 Mack E7-400 truck. He used AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oil, an AMSOIL By-Pass Filter and periodic oil analysis.

Little did Gray know that his phenomenal story would circulate and continue to astonish truckers and others in the industry, making him an AMSOIL legend.

Recent proof of his influence involved AMSOIL Dealer Gerry Reid who was doing a boat show in Philadelphia. "A man came to my booth, and I found out he worked at the Allentown Mack assembly plant," said Reid. "I asked if he was familiar with the parts (new and used) from a Mack six cylinder. He said 'very much so.’"

With that, Reid handed the man a set of the rings taken from Gray’s famous truck and asked if he could guess how many miles were on them. "The man said he would estimate about two to three thousand miles." Reid then handed him the main bearing from the truck and the man, again, said it looked like it had a couple thousand miles on it.

That’s when Reid dropped the bombshell and showed him the brochure detailing Gray’s 409,000 mile run without an oil change which resulted in an insignificant amount of wear. Gray’s engine has over a million miles on it overall. "He was flabbergasted to say the least, and said he found it hard to believe," said Reid. "He examined the rest of the parts and left the booth shaking his head."

Reid said he has to laugh at the irony. "Looks like I’m getting more miles out of the parts than Haywood did."
